Angelene: My Sourdough Starter
HISTORY:
I created a starter named, Gertrude (Gertie) on March 17, 2025. She developed nicely and was doubling as she should. I started baking in April and could not get good oven spring or a loaf that wasn’t gummy.
I decided to buy an active starter with the plan to add to Gertie. This starter took forever and so I ordered a different one on Amazon. So I ended up with 3 starters, named; Gertie, Doughlene and Angus.
After trial & error, I mixed them all together and renamed her ANGELENE, ANGIE for short;

Name your starter whatever you want but I would’t be mad if you used any of the previous aliases. 🙂
She does better/is happier in warmer weather. I crocheted sweaters for her starter jars and she loves it (try a fuzzy sock).
If you are new to baking sourdough, I’m happy to share what has worked for me. I make an artisan round loaf, sandwich bread, pasta, breadcrumbs and from discard; tortillas, crackers, egg muffins, pancakes, muffins and more.
I highly recommend visiting thesourdoughjourney.com‘s encyclopedia section. GOOD LUCK!
Also, I have a sourdough calculator that helps you figure out how much to feed to have enough starter for baking, on my unfinished website that you are welcome to use; https://www.momslifetips.com/resources/calculators/
